After a shaky beginning, Hersey starting pitcher Sarah Platt settled down and pitched well. Barrington got 3 runs in the first and 2 in the second on a combination of walks and errors. Platte only allowed 2 runs over the remaining 6 innings of the contest. Hersey got 3 runs back in the second. By the 5th the score was tied 5 to 5.
In Hersey’s 5th inning, Platt came up to bat with no one on base. The Barrington pitcher got ahead in the count getting two quick strikes on her. Platt noticed that the outfield was shifting with the pitch location. She saw the left fielder move to the left before the 1-2 pitch. Sarah moved away from the plate a little step then crushed the pitch out over the left center field fence. It was a towering, deep home run that easily cleared the fence in center field.
Platt’s solo home run put Hersey ahead 6 to 5 and fired up the team! After going 2-3 and hitting the ball hard in every at bat, Platte was walked on 4 pitches in her at bat in the 7th inning
Barrington scored a run late in the game to force extra innings. In the 8th, Barrington got the lead-off batter on with a bunt single that the runner beat it out for a hit. She went to second on a wild pitch / passed ball. Barrington then bunted her to third. The #3 hitter hit a line drive that was caught by the center fielder who threw to the cuttoff, but, the throw home was late and Barrington squirmed out a victory.
The near Hersey victory sets up a an interesting rematch possibility for the upcoming state playoffs later this month.
